KATATONIA – Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State – Release: 06.06.25 Genre: Progressive Metal

Sweden’s high priests of melancholic metal, KATATONIA, return with a masterclass in atmospheric depth and emotional precision. Their latest offering, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, released today via Napalm Records, is not just an album – it’s an immersive descent into shadow and solace, drenched in haunting beauty and glimmers of distant hope.

Over three decades into their genre-defining career, KATATONIA once again prove why they remain essential. Seamlessly blending post-metal textures with ghostly melodies and progressive nuance, the band continues to evolve – building on the foundations of 2023’s Sky Void of Stars while pushing their sonic vision to new heights.

From the pulsating weight of “Thrice” and “Warden”, to the hypnotic elegance of “Lilac”, the album is a study in contrast: heavy yet fragile, bleak yet oddly comforting. Vocalist Jonas Renkse leads the emotional charge, his unmistakable tone weaving through delicate harmonies, brooding riffs, and cinematic synths.

Standout track “Efter Solen” (Swedish for “After the Sun”) breaks new ground with sparse, minimalistic instrumentation and lyrics in the band’s native tongue – a breathtaking moment of raw vulnerability. Meanwhile, the ceremonial “Wind of No Change” and the emotionally charged “Temporal” stretch the band’s atmospheric palette, merging electronic whispers with crushing emotional weight.

The production – led by Renkse himself and captured by Lawrence Mackrory, mixed by Adam Noble, and mastered by Robin Schmidt – shines with clarity and restraint. Every space between notes feels intentional, letting silence speak as loudly as sound.

With Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, KATATONIA once again manage the impossible: channeling despair into something strangely healing. For the forgotten, the lonely, and the lost, this album stands as both mirror and refuge — proof that even in the darkest night, there’s music to guide us through.
