The visualiser was created by Łukasz Jaszak.
Reflecting on the track, MORTIIS explains that the word ‚Tundra‘ has been a recurring presence throughout his creative life, attached to various songs and lyrics over the years. The earliest versions of the piece carried the title ‚Tundra‘ or even ‚Thundra‘, before ‚Heart of Hell‘ was added to provide context. According to the artist, a significant portion of the lyrics draws on the period between his albums ‚The Stargate‘ and ‚The Smell of Rain‘.
‚Ghosts of Europa‘ represents a creative liberation for MORTIIS, conceived without genre boundaries and shaped by years of intense personal struggle. The album features an extraordinary cast of guest musicians, including Christopher Amott of ARCH ENEMY, Sarah Jezebel Deva of CRADLE OF FILTH, Thorsten Quaeschning of TANGERINE DREAM, and Matthew Setzer of SKINNY PUPPY, among others. Mixing duties were handled by Sean Beavan, whose credits include NINE INCH NAILS, DEPECHE MODE, and SYSTEM OF A DOWN.
Håvard Ellefsen, the Norwegian artist behind the MORTIIS entity, first rose to prominence as a founding member of black metal legends EMPEROR before embarking on a pioneering solo career that would prove foundational to the Dungeon Synth genre. ‚Ghosts of Europa‘ marks yet another evolution in a career defined by restless reinvention.
MORTIIS is also confirmed for an Australian tour in November 2026.
