SEPULTURA – The Last Chapter of a Legend

There are farewells that feel like exhaustion.

Sepultura’s farewell is not one of them. The Cloud of Unknowing, the final EP from the Brazilian metal icons, arrives via Nuclear Blast Records in the midst of their worldwide farewell tour „Celebrating Life Through Death“ – and the title says it all. No bitterness, no nostalgia, but one last, deep breath from a band that made the impossible its habit.

For over 40 years, Sepultura have shaped the global metal landscape like few bands outside the Anglo-American axis. Born in Belo Horizonte, performed on the biggest festival stages in the world, written in a language that needs no translation – the language of guitars, rhythms, rage and dignity. Now, at the end of this extraordinary journey, the band wanted one thing: to capture a final creative moment and preserve it for posterity.

The result is four tracks that cover the full spectrum of what Sepultura is. The Cloud of Unknowing is no greatest-hits imitation, no tame exit. The EP showcases both the ferocity and the depth that have defined the band’s legacy – a bittersweet farewell that documents the musicians‘ creativity at its peak.

The focus track „All Souls Rising“ deserves particular attention. Vocalist Derrick Green describes the inspiration behind it: the core idea is rooted in a book by Madison Smartt Bell about the slave rebellion in 1780s Haiti – and from there draws a direct line to the present day. It speaks to what becomes possible when people come together beyond race, religion and politics.

„It’s about what happens when we come together beyond race, religion and politics – and about the changes we can make within ourselves.“
— Derrick Green

What Green describes here is quintessentially Sepultura: political, poetic, never preachy. The band has always known how to intertwine the personal with the universal – to weave societal fault lines together with human vulnerability, without ever losing the hardness that makes metal what it is.

The remaining tour dates read like a farewell in slow motion – from the US through Canada, across Europe to festivals like Hellfest, Graspop, Rock in Rio Lisboa and Wacken Open Air, through to sold-out club shows in Helsinki. Those who want to experience Sepultura live one last time have few, but significant, opportunities left.

In the end, every great band faces the same question: what does a worthy conclusion sound like? Sepultura answer it with four tracks that don’t sound like a conclusion at all – but like a fire still burning. The Cloud of Unknowing is not an epitaph. It is one final surge.
