Nine years after Laune der Natur, Die Toten Hosen are finally releasing another full-length album of new songs. With Trink aus, wir müssen gehen!, the five musicians are coming full circle nearly 45 years after their formation in 1982 — it will be the band’s final regular studio album. „Someone shouted in the rehearsal room, ‚Let’s make one last album!‘. I have no idea who exactly it was, but in any case, the enthusiasm was huge. We then decided together to go all out one last time and give it everything we’ve got,“ says Campino.
On Trink aus, wir müssen gehen!, the band once again showcases the full range they’ve stood for over the decades — loud and soft, euphoric and melancholic, personal and political. At the same time, the band looks back on their own lives and their shared history.
In a joint foreword, Die Toten Hosen write: „Almost 45 years after the Opel Gang was founded, here is our final regular album. That doesn’t mean Die Toten Hosen are breaking up! Since we’re friends, we’ll only do that at the cemetery — Jochen, Wölli, and Faust are already waiting for us there. It’s about something else: We’ll remain as a gang, but we’ll be stepping back little by little. Part of that is that we no longer want to make albums that reflect our lives and have always been a kind of diary for us. In a song many years ago, we declared: ‚We’ll decide the end ourselves!‘ It’s important to us to keep that promise.“
The band describes Trink aus, wir müssen gehen! as a kind of final grand chapter in their shared history — an album about beginnings, goodbyes, and everything in between. Songs like „Was früher einmal war“ and „Kein Blatt zwischen uns“ directly grapple with their own past, friendship, and the people who have accompanied the band on their journey.
„Alles muss raus!“ — A Bonus Album Like No Other
The album is complemented by the extensive bonus album Alles muss raus!, on which Die Toten Hosen have recorded 25 songs together with numerous artists that mean a great deal to them. „This disc contains 25 songs that we love. Songs by friends, by role models, and by people whose work we admire. Songs we would have loved to have written ourselves,“ the band explains.
The five musicians weren’t interested in reinterpreting the songs or imposing a particular artistic twist on them. Instead, they wanted to „sneak into them unobtrusively“ — as „stowaways“ in their own favorite songs. All tracks were created as duets with the respective original artists or collaborators.
The result is a collection of diverse musical influences and encounters that is as personal as it is surprising. „When we read through the names that appear together on this record now, it seems a bit absurd even to us,“ the band writes. „At the very least, we wouldn’t necessarily have assumed that one day punk legend Charlie Harper and Vicky Leandros would be featured on the same album.“
Andreas Gursky, Vinyl, and a Legacy Sealed in Wax
For the design of Trink aus, wir müssen gehen!, Die Toten Hosen enlisted longtime friend and world-renowned photographer Andreas Gursky. Based on one of his most famous works, a collaborative cover design was created that brings the band and the artist together in a special way.
„The world won’t care all that much, but we’re having an incredible time with it,“ Die Toten Hosen write about the entire project. „And if you can share a little of that with us, all the effort will have been worth it.“
Trink aus, wir müssen gehen! and Alles muss raus! are out now — May 29, 2026.
