Los Angeles thrash legends Dark Angel are set to release their long-awaited fifth studio album, Extinction Level Event, on September 5th via Reversed Records. The announcement marks a historic comeback for one of the genre’s most influential bands, arriving just ahead of their first full North American tour in decades, where they’ll share the stage with Sacred Reich, Hirax, Vio-Lence, Midnight, Void, and Interceptor.
Pioneers of Thrash
Formed in 1981 – the same year as Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Mercyful Fate, and Sodom – Dark Angel quickly carved out a reputation as one of thrash metal’s fiercest forces. Their classic albums We Have Arrived (1985), Darkness Descends (1986), Leave Scars (1989), and Time Does Not Heal (1991) became staples of the genre, showcasing a furious blend of speed, technical precision, and unrelenting aggression. Fans across the globe proudly wore the band’s name on shirts and patches, cementing their cult legacy even after their initial run came to an end.
New Album, Same Intensity
The new record, Extinction Level Event, promises to uphold that legacy with uncompromising force. Fans got an early taste earlier this year when Dark Angel released the blistering title track, written by late co-founding guitarist Jim Durkin. In July, the thrash faithful were hit again with “Circular Firing Squad,” a track that reaffirms the band’s trademark ferocity.
“Musically, lyrically, and vocally, I’m so stoked about this album,” says drummer Gene Hoglan, known as the “Atomic Clock” for his legendary precision. Hoglan’s resume spans some of metal’s heaviest hitters, including Death, Testament, Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Dethklok, and the all-star tribute Death To All.
A Classic Line-up with New Blood
Dark Angel’s 2025 line-up unites several classic-era members: Hoglan on drums, Eric Meyer on guitar, Mike Gonzalez on bass, and vocalist Ron Rinehart. The band also welcomes guitarist Laura Christine, who first joined them on stage in 2022. “I’m really excited about Dark Angel right now,” Hoglan notes. “And everyone who’s heard the new album is losing their minds.”
Studio Powerhouse
The album was produced and engineered by Rob Shallcross and mixed by industry heavyweight Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica, Rush) at Vancouver’s Armoury Studios, ensuring that Extinction Level Event sounds as massive as its name suggests.
With a revitalized line-up, a crushing new record, and a long-overdue return to the stage, Dark Angel are ready to remind the world why they remain one of thrash metal’s most revered forces.
