In an evocative blend of heavy metal passion and introspective reverence, German black metal band IMHA TARIKAT has unveiled an extraordinary tribute to the legendary Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy. Their latest lyric video, The Sun Goes Down (A Thin Lizzy Interpretation), is far more than a mere cover—it is a deeply personal homage that bridges fierce musical energy with nostalgic storytelling.
This landmark piece is not only the final advance single but also a bonus track available on the Digipak and Artbook editions of the band’s forthcoming album, Confessing Darkness. Scheduled for release on June 20, 2025, Confessing Darkness marks the group’s fourth full-length effort, promising to expand their sonic boundaries and showcase a refined yet raw expression of their artistic vision.
Behind the thunderous riffs and intense vocals lies a story of youthful turmoil and catharsis. Band mastermind Kerem Yilmaz reminisces, „When we were in our early twenties, we used to lock ourselves up in our rehearsal room, where we drank, punched walls, and threw bottles through the hallways of the complex while listening to black and thrash metal.“ These rambunctious days were fueled by a desire to channel their inner fury into music—a way to vent explosive energies that might otherwise manifest harmfully.
Yilmaz recalls a transformative night that would forever alter the band’s creative outlook. Amid the chaos of a messy, sleepless dawn spent with his friend Ricardo, a chance play of Thin Lizzy’s „Got to Give It Up“ struck a resonant chord. „I was captivated by the tune, even though I had never been much of a hard rock fan. Their music began to speak to me and felt as if it was also about my life,“ he confides. The stirring lyrics and the profound melancholy of The Sun Goes Down, as witnessed in a live performance, ignited memories and emotions that left him with indelible goosebumps.
Inspired by the raw authenticity of Lynott’s storytelling and the late bassist’s groovy, soulful basslines, Yilmaz set out to reinterpret the classic in a way that honored its spirit while infusing it with his own artistic identity. Drawing parallels with the cold, monotonous riff of Trelldom’s „Steg“—accentuated by Gaahl’s enigmatic spoken vocals—the tribute reimagines The Sun Goes Down as both a melancholic elegy and a fierce musical statement.
IMHA TARIKAT’s latest endeavor is a testament to the band’s evolution from wild, boundary-pushing beginnings toward a more thoughtful and layered expression of musical heritage. It is a celebration of both the past and the present—a melding of memories, emotions, and the relentless drive to innovate within the darkly compelling realm of black metal.
As fans eagerly await the full release of Confessing Darkness, this lyrical reinterpretation stands as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of Thin Lizzy and the transformative power of music to shape and mirror personal journeys. In honoring Phil Lynott, IMHA TARIKAT not only pays homage to a rock icon but also cements their own legacy in the annals of metal history.
