Echo Award-nominated masters of German folk rock, SUBWAY TO SALLY, will release their 14th studio album Himmelfahrt [en: Ascension] on March 24, 2023 via Napalm Records. Since the beginning of their career, the band has explored the various abysses of the human soul, as well as celebrated its great successes. Himmelfahrt now marks a turning point: with “hope” being the leitmotif of the new album. Confidence is celebrated, which cannot exist without bitterness in the face of current world events.
With Himmelfahrt, SUBWAY TO SALLY prove that even after 30 years as a band, they are still fresh, relevant and innovative. True to the motto „never back, always ahead“ from „Leinen Los„, the Germans deliver a musical work of the highest quality. Stellar arrangements, profound lyrics, often rousing yet sometimes restrained melodies, as well as a constant drive forward characterize SUBWAY TO SALLY’s new songs. Sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, but always peppered with the trademarks that have been familiar for decades, the band heralds a new beginning.
The band states: ”The songwriting for Himmelfahrt began long before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, just shortly after the release of our last album Hey! (2019), which in retrospect seems prophetic and depressing in the face of international pandemics and wars.“ For the first time, in the face of all of this bleakness, the band had to face the hard truth of asking themselves, “Is this not an appropriate time to celebrate hope?” So, sadly, the initial new album material was disposed of, as the band took the stance of, “Hope is fuel for the future.”
SUBWAY TO SALLY: “Many songs on the new album are about departure and journey; about reaching out to others to lead them from their darkest depths in hopes of rising above – all the while knowing that current world events, however, put this hope to the most severe test. Thus details the downtrodden bitterness that clouds hope. Even God has to have his say on the album, to vent his disappointment with his own work.”

SUBWAY TO SALLY beweisen auf Himmelfahrt, dass sie auch nach über 30 Jahren Bandgeschichte am Zahn der Zeit und innovativ sind. Getreu dem Motto „niemals zurück, immer voraus“ aus „Leinen Los“ liefern die Potsdamer einmal mehr ein musikalisches Werk höchster Qualität ab. Große Arrangements, tiefgründige Texte, mal mitreißende, mal zurückhaltende Melodien sowie ein ständiger Drang nach vorn charakterisieren SUBWAY TO SALLYs Songs auf Himmelfahrt. Mal laut, mal leise, aber immer mit den vertrauten Trademarks gespickt läutet die Band einen Neuanfang ein.
Die Band sagt: „Das Songwriting für Himmelfahrt begann lange vor Corona, kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des letzten Albums Hey! (2019), das rückblickend im Angesicht von Pandemie und Krieg prophetisch und bedrückend wirkt.“ Mit Blick auf das danach entstandene Material musste sich die Band ab einem gewissen Punkt mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, ob nicht gerade jetzt genau der richtige Zeitpunkt ist, um die Hoffnung zu feiern. „Hoffnung ist Treibstoff für die Zukunft“ (SUBWAY TO SALLY), und so wurde das ursprüngliche Material für das neue Album als unzeitgemäß eingestuft und entsorgt, und ebnete den Weg für das, was heute auf Himmelfahrt zu hören ist.
SUBWAY TO SALLY: „Viele Songs des neuen Albums handeln jetzt von Aufbruch und Reise, davon, anderen Menschen die Hand zu reichen, um sie aus dunkelster Tiefe ins Licht zu führen. Die aktuellsten Ereignisse in der Welt stellen diese Hoffnung allerdings auf eine schwere Probe. Wermutstropfen und Verbitterung trüben die Hoffnung. So muss auch Gott auf dem Album zu Wort kommen, um seiner Enttäuschung über sein Werk Luft zu machen.“
